How Shopify’s Group Blocks Give You Total Control Over Page Layouts

Shopify has been steadily rolling out improvements to the theme customizer — and one of the most powerful additions to emerge from newer themes like Horizon is the introduction of Group Blocks.

If you’ve ever wanted to create flexible multi-column layouts or design fully custom sections without diving into code, this feature is a big deal. In the video below, I walk you through how Group Blocks work, how to use them effectively, and why they’re becoming a cornerstone of modern Shopify theme development.

What Are Group Blocks?

Think of Group Blocks as containers that hold other content blocks. They let you “nest” elements like headings, images, or buttons together, giving you full control over how those pieces align and interact.

Before Group Blocks, your layout options were limited to what your theme allowed. You could reorder blocks inside a section, but creating more advanced, structured designs (like multi-column layouts) required either custom coding or an external app.

Now, with Shopify’s Group Block feature, you can handle it all visually inside the theme editor.

Creating a Custom Layout (Without Code)

Here’s how it works:

  1. In your theme editor, go to Add Section and select a Custom Section (Horizon and other newer themes support this).
  2. Inside the section, choose Layout and add a Group Block.
  3. By default, Shopify stacks items vertically. But by changing the direction to horizontal, you can instantly create rows.
  4. Within those rows, you can add more Group Blocks — creating columns inside each one.

For example, you could create a three-column layout that displays an image, a heading, and a button in each column, all inside Shopify’s native customizer.

If you want your layout to be more organized, you can rename your Group Blocks to things like Column 1Column 2, or Row 1, making it easy to keep track of where everything lives.

Why This Matters for Merchants

This might sound like a small change, but for e-commerce managers and Shopify developers, it’s a major leap forward.

Group Blocks unlock the ability to:

  • Design flexible layouts without touching Liquid code.
  • Visually experiment with content structure in real time.
  • Reuse design patterns across pages for a consistent brand experience.
  • Save time building landing pages, promotional sections, and custom layouts.

It’s also incredibly useful for marketing teams who need to move quickly. Whether you’re building a seasonal campaign page, a Black Friday landing section, or a homepage refresh, you can now make meaningful layout changes without waiting on a developer.

The Big Picture

The introduction of Group Blocks represents Shopify’s broader shift toward giving merchants more control over their themes. It’s part of a trend I’ve been watching where features that once required developer intervention are now built directly into the theme editor.

That doesn’t make usdevelopers obsolete but it makes them more efficient. We can focus on custom logic and brand storytelling instead of repetitive layout tweaks.

For brands managing fast-paced campaigns or multiple markets, this kind of flexibility can make a noticeable difference in speed to market and creative execution.

Ready to Explore What’s Possible?

If you haven’t tried Group Blocks yet, it’s worth experimenting, especially if your store runs on a newer theme like Horizon.

Once you get comfortable, you’ll be able to build more dynamic, organized, and on-brand layouts directly inside Shopify’s editor.
