Celebrating the Launch of Needles in the Hay

One of my favorite parts about working with Shopify merchants is seeing a store go from an idea to a living, breathing online space. That’s exactly what just happened with Needles in the Hay, an Ontario-based yarn shop that has built a beautiful home for fibre lovers everywhere.

If you’re a knitter, crocheter, or simply someone who loves high-quality natural fibres, Needles in the Hay is worth checking out. They specialize in wool, alpaca, silk, linen, and more with a wide range of colors and textures that make starting your next project irresistible. Beyond the yarn itself, they’ve built a warm, welcoming community where you can connect with others, learn new techniques, and find inspiration for your craft.

The team has created a space that feels more like a gathering of friends than a retail store,  and their new website captures that beautifully.

Building a Store That Grows with You

When I partner with our merchants, I work on a Shopify store that could grow alongside their business. In this case, that meant creating a design that reflects their brand’s warmth, while also ensuring the site is built on a strong technical foundation.

One of the things we focused on was making sure the site was upgrade-safe. Shopify evolves constantly, and merchants shouldn’t feel like their entire theme breaks every time they want to take advantage of new features. For example, swatches.  A common need for any store selling color-based products like yarn, can often become messy if they’re set up in a way that requires heavy customization.

Using Swatches Creatively

I created a video (before we launched the site) on Upgrade-Safe Swatches in Shopify Without Metafields. In the video, I show how I implement swatches that make sense for the merchant while boosting revenue.

Why This Matters for Merchants

By setting up a store that balances design, performance, and stability, you’re giving yourself the freedom to actually run your business. For Needles in the Hay, that means more time for teaching classes, curating products, and fostering their community. For your store, it might mean preparing for seasonal sales, improving product photography, or exploring new marketing strategies.

Wrapping Up

The launch of Needles in the Hay’s website is a reminder that a well-built Shopify store is a foundation for growth. Whether you’re just starting out or managing an established brand, the way your store is built today shapes how smoothly you can operate tomorrow. If you’re looking for ongoing support to keep your store running smoothly without scrambling for fixes at the worst possible time, that’s exactly why I created my Membership Program. It’s designed for merchants who want to grow with confidence, knowing they have reliable support behind the scenes.
